Britt Reid, who was previously an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, pleaded guilty on Monday to driving drunk in a crash last year that hurt a 5-year-old girl’s brain.
The girl, Ariel Young, was in a three-car accident on February 4, 2021. She got a severe traumatic brain injury, a parietal fracture, brain contusions, and subdural hematomas. Authorities found that she and another child were in a broken-down car on Interstate 435 in Kansas City, Missouri, when Reid’s Dodge Ram, going 84 mph less than two seconds before impact, hit the car, sending the two children to the hospital.
A test done after the accident showed that Reid’s blood alcohol level was.113, which is more than 40% higher than what is allowed in Missouri.
“Mr. Reid took responsibility for what he did,” J.R. said. Hobbs, who was Reid’s lawyer. “Mr. Reid still feels bad about what he did and hopes that his guilty plea will bring justice to everyone he hurt.
Under the terms of his plea deal, Reid could get up to four years in prison, but the judge could give him less time. If a jury had found Reid guilty, he could have gone to prison for up to seven years.
In a news release, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said that a family member of one of the victims told the court that the family didn’t like the deal.
In November, the Chiefs and Ariel’s family came to an agreement about money. The Chiefs said they would give Ariel “world-class medical care and long-term financial stability” for the “rest of her life.”
After the Chiefs lost Super Bowl LV in February 2021, their deal with Reid was not renewed. On October 28, he will get his sentence.
