Aug. 3— When their car hit a fully loaded dump truck on Route 113 in Standish on Wednesday afternoon, a mother and her 2-year-old daughter were seriously hurt.
Rebecca McVety, who lives in Standish and is 32 years old, was driving a 2004 Volvo when it hit a Leavitt Earthworks dump truck full of dirt head-on. Erik Betters, a truck driver from Standish who is 55 years old, was not hurt.
According to a press release from Capt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, McVety was taken by Lifeflight helicopter to the Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that could have cost him his life. McVety’s 2-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital by ambulance because she was hurt very badly.
Foss said that McVety’s car crossed the center line and went straight into the path of the dump truck, hitting it head-on. Investigators found that each driver was wearing a seat belt and that the toddler was in a child safety seat.
Police are looking into whether or not the driver was distracted at the time of the crash. Foss said that speed and alcohol had nothing to do with it. The car was pretty badly damaged, and McVety and her daughter had to be pulled out of the wreckage.
Around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Route 113 in Standish reopened near where it meets Route 25. This was about five hours after a dump truck and a car collided into each other.
