In OREM, Utah, authorities have arrested a former bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in connection with a sex abuse investigation that has spanned decades and involved numerous victims.
On Wednesday, 77-year-old Carl Johnson was arrested in Orem and sent to the Davis County Jail on seven counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Johnson, according to the investigation, held several trusted positions within the Church, including that of bishop, while abusing children as young as 2. In the 1990s, Johnson also held the office of Mayor of West Bountiful City.
All of these victims were instructed to keep quiet about what had occurred to them. When disclosures about these acts were made, Johnson often attempted to bury the evidence. A police document alleges that Johnson “used his position of trust to influence any disclosures.”
Sheriff’s investigators in Davis County have identified at least six victims and likely many more.
The abuse occurred between 1985 and 1996, and it is detailed in the police report that was made public on Thursday. The victims all claimed that Johnson had sexually abused them in Davis County at different times. Johnson, in an interview with detectives, allegedly acknowledged to the abuse claimed by all three victims.
