HERRIMAN, Utah (KUTV)—The Herriman City Police Department released the name of a woman who died in a crash between a car and a person on foot the day before.
According to a statement from the department, 38-year-old Stefanie Whittaker was jogging on the east sidewalk of Mountain View Corridor early on August 24 when she was hit by a car turning onto the road.
When he hit Whittaker, the driver of a black pickup truck was turning right from Real Vista to Mountain View, according to authorities. After what happened, the man called the police and stayed at the scene. HCPD said that he is helping with the investigation in every way.
Whittaker was jogging at the time, which was before sunrise. Investigators are looking into how well Whittaker could see and “other environmental factors” that might have caused the crash. But at this point, they don’t think the man was under the influence of any drugs.
“At this point, there are no signs that either impairment or speed were factors in the crash,” police said.
A Heber City Police Department officer who wasn’t on duty was nearby and went to help. He started trying to save lives, and then he gave them to the first responders from the Unified Fire Authority.
“…Unfortunately, (first responders) were not able to revive the victim,” the Herriman PD said in a statement. “She was pronounced dead at the scene due to obvious traumatic injuries.”
Herriman police said, “Ms. Whittaker’s family has been told, and we are helping them deal with this terrible situation.”
Her family told the police that Whittaker knew the road well and that she often ran along that route in the morning. But the crash happened at a place that has had trouble in the past.
In the last six months, there have been nine accidents at that intersection, and about half of them have hurt people.
People who live in the area and drive there often want Herriman to put a stoplight there. At the moment, there is a stop sign at the intersection, but it doesn’t seem to be visible from everywhere.
“It’s so hard to see,” said Baylee Graham, who was hurt in July when a car ran a stop sign and crashed into her boyfriend’s car. “It needs to be changed for the safety of others.”
