According to the Hightstown Police Department, on Friday, September 9, 2022, at about 9:00 p.m., officers from the department were called to the intersection of West Ward Street and Mercer Street in reference to a pedestrian who had been struck by a car; dispatch updates indicated that the pedestrian was unconscious but breathing.

When Sergeant Miller and Officer Moreno arrived at the scene, they discovered an unconscious male teenager from Hightstown Borough who attended Melvin H. Kreps Middle School and had suffered serious head and body damage. Officers started CPR when the toddler went into cardiac arrest while they were waiting for emergency medical help to come. After police assistance, Hightstown EMS resumed performing life-saving procedures. When Capital Health paramedics arrived on the scene, they assisted Hightstown EMS in transporting the victim to the Helene Fuld Campus of the Capital Health Trauma Center in Trenton, where they continued performing life-saving procedures.

Despite the best efforts of everyone concerned, the victim passed away from his injuries in the hospital and was declared dead by hospital staff at 10:20 p.m.

The Hightstown Police Department and the Officer-Serious Collision Response Team of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office looked into the collision. Det. Mecca and Det. Vaccaro persisted in the investigation, which revealed that the victim, a bicyclist, was struck while crossing the street as the driver, Ms. Kathryn Wagner, an East Windsor, New Jersey resident, made a left turn from Mercer Street onto West Ward Street. The investigation revealed that there was no criminality connected to the incident and that it was determined to be an accident. Ms. Wagner stayed put and assisted the investigators in their work. Later, Ms. Wagner received a traffic citation for imprudent driving.

Staff members at the school were made aware of the incident so they could get ready for any assistance the pupils might require as a result of it. Sgt. Miller or Det. Mecca of the Hightstown Police Department welcome any witnesses to this incident who may have information. The Hightstown Police Department would like to express its gratitude to everyone who helped with this unfortunate event, stayed on the site, and cooperated with the investigation.
