Huntsville –  Troopers in Utah believe a technical problem may have led a dump truck to lose control and fall down a ravine, plunging its driver and passenger around 50 feet below.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Irvine, shortly after 2:00 p.m., emergency services were sent to the intersection of Trappers Loop Road and state Route 39.
The man, whose identity and age remain unknown, was reportedly driving a dump truck north on Trappers Loop Road when he lost control and plunged down a ravine about 150 feet from the road after crossing State Route 39. He noted that the man had not been wearing a seatbelt and had already exited the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived.
The driver’s injuries were so severe that he had to be airlifted to Ogden’s McKay-Dee Hospital by medical helicopter. According to officials from the Weber Fire District, the injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.
Witnesses who called in the collision said the dump truck’s brakes looked like they were smoking as it off the road, and Irvine said that while the cause of the crash is still being investigated, that detail has been corroborated by the preliminary findings of the inquiry.

He speculated that a mechanical malfunction may have contributed to the incident.

Weber County Sheriff’s Office deputies, as well as Morgan County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and firefighters from the Weber Fire District, all responded to the scene of the accident. A small brush fire was started by the collision, but officials said firefighters quickly extinguished it.

After being closed because of the accident, all lanes have been reopened.
