Roberto Garcia was arrested on June 3 on a $60,000 warrant out of Weber County for three counts of first-degree felony charges, including one count each of rape of a child, sodomy of a child, and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, according to the probable cause statement filed in support of his arrest.

After a woman complained that Garcia had sexually abused her daughter, age 7, an investigation was launched in April 2019.

According to the charge documents filed with the court, the police traveled all the way to Texas in order to question the girl, who is now 15 years old. She told police that she and her family often went to Garcia’s North Ogden home, and that on many occasions, Garcia raped her by covering her face with a pillow in his bedroom.

Police reports state that the victim stated that after each alleged incident of sexual abuse, Garcia “would buy her a pool pass at the North Ogden public pool and would get her McDonald’s Happy Meals.”

The alleged abuse began in 2014 and continued into 2015.

According to the mother’s statement to the investigators, her child’s behavior began to shift around that time. The child reportedly told her mother that she no longer wanted to attend the suspect’s home due to the suspect’s erratic behavior and her own withdrawal. Some more relatives were able to corroborate these stories through later conversations.

Garcia did not answer to any of the detectives’ demands, despite their multiple calls to his attorney and their arrangement for him to respond in writing to questions raised by the inquiry.

Garcia was arrested after a case was filed in Ogden’s 2nd District Court out of concern for the victim’s safety should he be deported to Mexico before facing prosecution for the assault.

A Washington County lieutenant named Dave Crouse informed the St. George News that the suspect had turned himself in at the Purgatory Correctional Facility on Friday morning after discovering that he was wanted on an Ogden warrant.

Crouse stated that Garcia told corrections officers he was from Las Vegas, despite the fact that his North Ogden address can be seen on the probable cause statement submitted in support of the arrest. Crouse said he didn’t know if Garcia had worked or lived in Washington County, but that the lieutenant was relieved to see him behind bars anyway.

When asked if Odgen Police would come down to retrieve him, Crouse said, “Of course they would.”

Until then, he said, the suspect will remain on federal immigration hold and a $60,000 bail at the Washington County Jail.
