“WEST JORDAN, Utah.” On Thursday afternoon, a man who taught primary class at a West Jordan Latter-day Saints branch was given a sentence for sexually abusing one of his students.
An agreement with prosecutors has Sean Sund, 49, serving 361 days in the Salt Lake County Jail and then four years of probation. He entered a guilty plea to the second-degree felony charge of sex abuse of a child earlier this year.
At his sentencing, Sund took a moment to apologize to the court.
“I take full responsibility of my actions in this case. I’m in treatment and therapy. I’m very sorry for what my behavior has done to the victim and her family,” Sund said.
Finally, after more than four years, the case has been put to rest by the sentencing. In June of 2018, Sund was arrested by police in West Jordan after an 8-year-old girl reported that he had sexually abused her during a sleepover at his house.

Documents allege that Sund, who was neither married nor a parent, repeatedly abused the victim during sleepovers at his house. According to the accusations, Sund and the victim met in his first grade classroom.

Sund has completed treatment for sexual offenders and will remain on the registry for the rest of his life. After his hearing on a Thursday afternoon, police arrested Sund and took him into custody to begin serving his sentence.

The victim’s family, according to the prosecutor, was relieved that their child would not have to go through a trial.
