TAYLORSVILLE On Tuesday, the pediatric home hospice nurse who had been caring for the bedridden and nonverbal kid was arrested and charged with abusing the child.
Salt Lake resident Jessie Dean Gillie, 42, is being prosecuted for two felonies in the 3rd District Court: aggravated sexual assault of a child and child abuse.
A probable abuse case involving a youngster under the age of 12 was reported to police in January by the boy’s father. Indictment documents state that the youngster “is bedridden, nonverbal, and has cancer,” and that a home hospice nurse helps care for him.
The charges allege that the boy’s parents discovered injuries to their son’s genitalia and several scrapes and bruises on their son’s hands. Parental monitoring footage shows Gillie pressing “extremely hard” on their son’s hand until he “cried out in pain,” according to the charges.
According to the accusations, a detective was then given further films documenting assault. The boy’s primary home nurse, whom the detective presented the video to, also expressed “concerns” about the treatment he had received.
In court filings, prosecutors state that Gillie “used his position as a pediatric home health nurse to inflict substantial suffering and harm on a victim who is bedridden and unable to communicate,” and they ask that Gillie be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bond until his trial.
