A man and a woman were shot by a Fish and Wildlife officer for the Ute Indian Tribe on July 17 when they were reportedly camping near Uinta Canyon, according to newly released data.
Not only is it unclear from the body cam footage and paperwork why two people were shot, but it also isn’t clear whether or not the victims were armed, despite the fact that the paperwork suggests they weren’t. The identity of the tribal officer has not been made public.
On Ute tribal land near Uinta Canyon, north of Neola, sheriff’s deputies from Duchesne County were sent to the site shortly after the shooting. A man and a woman, whose identities have not been disclosed, were killed “after a UTV incident on tribal property.” There is no indication in the archives as to whether or not the two individuals knew each other.
The video from a deputy’s body camera in Duchesne County was obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune via a public records request. In the film, an officer drives up to a group of five people and three automobiles standing in the middle of a dirt road in a field of sagebrush. The question remains, Why were they shot at all ?
