WEST VALLEY CITY — An officer was struck by a vehicle and killed during a pursuit and three individuals are in custody after an incident early Sunday morning, police said.
Police began a pursuit of a vehicle at about 3:30 a.m. and the officer was struck by the fleeing vehicle near the intersection of 4100 South and 2200 West, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxanne Vainuku.
The officer, whose name was not immediately made available, died at the scene.
“It was a very rapid incident and within a short time after, the officer had been hit by the vehicle and killed,” Vainuku said. “(The officer) was out of his vehicle near that intersection when the suspect vehicle came through the intersection and hit him and killed him.”
Vainuku said she did not know why the officer was out of his vehicle. She added the three individuals in custody were being interviewed Sunday morning.
“We’re questioning them to figure out what level involvement is in this situation,” she said.
Vainuku said another police agency will be handling the investigation, per protocol.
More information will be added as soon as it is made available.
